John Bremer, a data science and market research executive with more than 25 years of C-suite leadership and the Market Research Council’s 2026 Research Innovator honoree, today announced the launch of Signals and Standards Research Consulting, an independent advisory practice focused on research data quality and the rigorous application of AI to data and insights.
The firm launches at a moment when the insights industry is confronting a crisis of confidence. In an era of bots, professional survey-takers, fraudulent respondents, and AI-generated content, how can organizations trust that the data behind their decisions is authentic and fit for purpose? Signals and Standards was created to answer that question with independent expertise rather than another product to sell.
“Companies need to stop simply telling clients their data is trustworthy and start showing them,” said Bremer, Founder and Principal of Signals and Standards. “That means interrogating your sources, validating your respondents, being as honest about your methods’ weaknesses as you are proud of their strengths, and using AI aggressively while auditing it relentlessly. The firm is independent by design. We have no products to push and no reseller relationships, so the only thing we have to protect is whether our judgment holds up.”
The firm’s name reflects the two halves of trustworthy research. A signal is the true pattern hidden in noisy data. Extracting it is a matter of methodology, statistics, and increasingly AI. A standard is the shared norm that lets everyone agree the signal is real. Upholding it is a matter of governance, benchmarking, and industry leadership. The firm’s premise is that neither is sufficient alone.
The firm takes aim at a problem Bremer has watched frustrate the industry for years. Many suppliers want to compete on quality, but no reliable independent signal exists that lets them differentiate what they are doing from the rest of the industry. Any firm can describe its quality processes but it is far too easy for one that is not doing the work to claim that it is, which leaves buyers with no practical way to tell what is real. Without that signal, firms cannot reap the rewards of producing quality work. Signals and Standards’ independent validation is designed to serve as a way for firms to demonstrate their commitment to quality. Because the validation examines both processes and results, it lets the firms that are investing in quality prove it, and it gives buyers a basis for separating substance from false claims.
Four Service Lines
Independent Evaluation and Validation. Structured, independent evaluation of an organization’s data-quality processes and the outcomes they actually produce. Where the evidence warrants it and the client wants it, Bremer adds his personal, named validation, giving suppliers a credible mark of trust to present to buyers and giving buyers a sound basis for confidence in procurement.
AI + Market Research Strategy. Development of AI strategy for firms in the data and insights space. Guidance on where AI applications and synthetic methods improve research and where they introduce risk, along with independent evaluation of AI research platforms and vendors, methodology modernization, and executive education for leadership teams and boards navigating the AI transition.
Data Quality Standards Advisory for Buyers. Independent data-quality audits, enterprise governance frameworks, supplier and panel evaluation, and support for large buyers developing their own data-quality standards and certification criteria.
AI Startup and Fractional Executive Advisory. Fractional Chief Research Officer and advisory engagements for technology startups and growth-stage insights firms that need senior research leadership but are not yet ready to hire a full-time executive. Evaluation of the data layers behind AI models to help ensure model quality.
A Unique Combination of Vantage Points
Bremer brings a combination that is rare in the industry: the statistical depth to audit the methods, the commercial and operating experience to advise the C-suite, and an active role on the industry bodies now writing the rules that clients must meet. He currently serves on the Insights Association Standards Committee and on SampleCon’s Global Data Quality Steering Committee, among others.
Most recently, Bremer served as Chief Product and Research Officer at Tenetic, a high-growth technology startup. Before that, he was Global Chief Research Officer and Group President at NPD, later Circana, where he led a 200-plus-person global analytics organization, served on the Executive Committee, and established the enterprise-wide data-quality standards that became a key strategic differentiator. Earlier, he was Chief Research and Chief Strategy Officer at Toluna, Chief Research Officer at Compete / Millward Brown Digital, and SVP of Research Science and Co-Head of the Center for Innovation at Harris Interactive. At Harris, his proprietary online sampling and weighting methodologies were credited with proving that online research could be accurate and trustworthy at a time when the industry needed that proof most.
Bremer holds an MBA with highest honors from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, an MS in Statistics from the University of Chicago, and a BA/BS in Economics and Statistics from Rice University. He completed his doctoral work in Political Science at the University of Rochester. He recently created and taught a graduate course on modern survey research methodology at the University of Chicago and is a frequent keynote speaker on AI and market research at events and conferences sponsored by the industry’s key organizations, including the Insights Association, SampleCon, ARF, the Market Research Council, and the American Statistical Association.
“Everything I have built in this industry, I built on trust in data,” Bremer added. “That trust now has to be earned all over again, under harder conditions. AI will be the most powerful research tool of our lifetimes, and at the same time the most powerful engine ever built for producing plausible, fluent, confident nonsense. When anyone can generate an answer that sounds right, the only durable advantage left is an answer that is right and can prove it. Signals and Standards exists to help organizations get to that proof.”
Signals and Standards Research Consulting is now accepting client engagements. Organizations interested in an independent validation, a data-quality audit, an AI-strategy briefing, or fractional research leadership are invited to contact John.
