Ready to get hands-on with some unstructured data analysis using an automated tool? Automated tools have improved greatly in the past few years. But getting started with them can be hard: who has time to trial new tools let alone learn them well enough to actually do some analysis of open-ended data?
We can help. In this workshop, students will have step-by-step guidance and coaching. In just 2 sessions (1.5 hours each), students will start an analysis from raw data, and end with results appropriate for summarizing effectively (and efficiently!) in PowerPoint reports.
Please note students will be asked to complete a short pre-reading assignment priori to start of class. Students will also be asked to complete a practice assignment between Session 1 and Session 2 (assume 1-1.5 hours).
What you’ll learn: In this workshop, students will participate in a case study project using a Research Rockstar-provided data file (with open-ended data) and free access to a Text Analytics platform (which we will provide/no cost to you) to analyze and report on the results. With guidance from your instructor, you’ll watch and then “do” your own analysis. Key steps will include:
- identifying codes (the themes that emerge from the unstructured data), which is an iterative process
- checking the codes (an important data quality step)
- reporting their frequencies
- analyzing them for valuable insights.
Why the Case Study approach: By using a case study approach, students will get to practice using a mock research project that will be parallel “enough” to their own work, that the new skills will be transferable to your next survey research project.
